10-7-2004: "Grants to Pennsy shortline and regional railroads" On behalf of Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell, state Transportation Secretary Allen D. Biehler, P.E., today announced that $7.8 million in capital budget funds has been awarded for projects that will help preserve rail-freight service and stimulate economic development across Pennsylvania. The eight projects are expected to create nearly 980 jobs. "The efficient operation of our railroads contributes to economic development, job creation and safer highways," Secretary Biehler said. "These grants provide the capital necessary to maintain and expand essential rail-freight operations in Pennsylvania." The Secretary said transportation is an important ingredient in the economic-development mix. "Keeping short-line and regional railroads in good operating condition means we're keeping the freight moving, supporting employers, jobs and families," Secretary Biehler said. A list of recipients and grant amounts follows: ¥ Allegheny County: Pittsburgh & Ohio Railroad Company, of McKees Rocks, $630,000, to rehabilitate five miles of existing rail track line on the Neville Island branch to Duff's Junction. Completion will improve rail safety and create 10 new jobs. (State of Pennsylvania - posted 10/07) (Courtesy RailPace Hotnews http://www.railpace.com/hotnews/)

Corporate Updates
As of 2004, SVI's Ohio Central RR Co. has located taxable personal property in Dover Twp., the City of Dover, Franklin Twp. (Strasburg-Franklin and Dover School Districts), the Village of Strasburg, Goshen Twp. (Indian Valley and New Philadelphia School Districts), the City of New Philadelphia, and Warwick Twp. throughout Tuscarawas County, OH.
For its 2004 TrainFest, C&OR laid "800 tons of fill and 600 tons of gravel into the yard" according to a 7-31-2004 article "TrainFestival on track for great weekend" http://www.timesreporter.com/left.php?external=repsearch_detail.php&ID=32159 (Courtesy of the Dover/New Philadelphia, OH Times-Reporter (http://www.timesreporter.com) A main line tie replacement program performed prior to ORDC's appraisal of the line has as of approximately 11-19-2004 begun restoring ballast to those replacement ties in numerous observed areas west of Uhrichsville, after the recent federal corporate tax reduction act permitted railroad companies to write off up to 50% of MOW costs.
Also for the TrainFest, C&OR removed yard tracks from both Caprail I. and Village of Dennison-owned portions of Dennision Yard, leaving the yard as a downgraded double stub-end thus ending the ladder track switching, passing sidings, and storage operations of the yard. Removal of rail reduces C&OR's personal property tax, and makes the rail available o be used elsewhere on SVI subsidiaries' networks. Whether C&OR received permission from caprail I. or ORDC to modify the Caprail I. portion of the yard, or whether C&OR will return the tracks to their original positions has yet to be announced.
SVI is considering opening a restaurant in downtown Sugarcreek, OH. This extends their line of businesses reportedly to freight carrier, passenger carrier, real estate interests, utility right-of-way provision, and shopping malls.
